Informal learning contexts in the construction of physical education student teachers’ professional identity

2022

This study aimed to investigate the significance of informal learning contexts in physical education (PE) student teachers’ professional identity construction. It addressed two research questions: How do informal learning contexts contribute to the construction of PE student teachers’ professional identity? What forms of relationships can be identified between the informal and formal contexts of learning in PE student teachers’ professional identity construction? The data consisted of 20 semi-structured interviews with PE student teachers during the final teaching practice period. The data were analysed using structural and pattern coding methods. The analysis revealed that informal learnin…

Overcoming acculturation: physical education recruits' experiences of an alternative pedagogical approach to games teaching

2015

Background: Physical education teacher education (PETE) programmes have been identified as a critical platform to encourage the exploration of alternative teaching approaches by pre-service teachers. However, the socio-cultural constraint of acculturation or past physical education and sporting experiences results in the maintenance of the status quo of a teacher-driven, reproductive paradigm. Previous studies have reported successfully overcoming the powerful influence of acculturation, resulting in a change in PETE students' custodial teaching beliefs and receptiveness to alternative teaching approaches. However, to date, limited information has been reported about how PETE students' accu…

Sustainable service-learning in Physical Education teacher education: examining postural control to promote ASD children’s well-being

2021

As classrooms become more and more diverse, it is imperative to provide physical education teacher education (PETE) students with opportunities to develop competencies that promote quality education for all students. In this study, PETE students applied a physical education servicelearning (SL) program aimed at enhancing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children’s motor domain and general well-being—objectives that are connected to the third focus of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Traditionally, research on SL has focused on students’ outcomes, and there is a call to examine SL’s effects on service receivers, which is the gap this paper aspires to fill. The aim of t…

Jumpan jalanjäljiltä akateemiseen maisterintutkintoon : Jyväskylän yliopiston liikunnanopettajakoulutus vuosina 1963-2013

2016

Physical education teacher education (PETE) became an academic discipline in 1963 in Finland at the University of Jyväskylä, which remains the only site for physical education teacher education in the country. All qualified PE teachers in Finland are educated to master’s level. This thesis describes the content formation of PE teacher education in its 50 years’ history in Finland. The data consists of study guides of the University of Jyväskylä and Jyväskylä University College of Education from 1963 to 2013, public and private archive materials, legal records concerning education, and interviews conducted with key persons in the history and development of PETE in Finland. The data was analy…

Kulttuurienvälinen osaaminen liikuntakasvatuksessa : opiskelijoiden kokemuksia turvapaikanhakijoille pidetyistä liikunnallisista kielityöpajoista

2017

Yhteiskunnan monimuotoistuminen heijastuu koulumaailmaan monella tavoin. Tartumme tähän aiheeseen selvittämällä liikunnanopettajaopiskelijoiden kokemuksia, kun he kohtasivat kulttuurisesti monimuotoisia ryhm…

A Longitudinal Study of the Effects of Service-Learning on Physical Education Teacher Education Students

2022

Research examining Service-Learning (SL) in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) is ample. However, long-term investigations are still scarce and literature demands the application of this type of design to uncover the effects of SL on the long run. This study followed a longitudinal quantitative approach; thus, the participants completed the Civic Attitudes and Skills Questionnaire (CASQ) in three occasions (pretest-postest1-postest2). Results show that there exist significant differences between mean values of the global outcomes of the CASQ; concretely, there was an improvement in the first interval followed by a decrease in the second period. Regarding the different dimensions of…

Service-learning in physical education teacher education: towards a critical and inclusive perspective

2020

The purpose of this study was to analyse the impact of service-learning (SL) in physical education teacher education students (PETEs). The PETEs (n = 169) completed one of the editions of a SL program carried out between 2015–2018. This program consisted of designing and leading motor game sessions to facilitate the inclusion of 116 children with special educational needs (SEN). The program was based on Kolb’s learning stages to promote reflection and critical thinking. Reflective journals were used as an instrument to gather information from their experiences. These data were analysed qualitatively through a multiphase approach, initial open-coding and axial coding, using NVivo (10) softwa…
